The TOEM 2 demo
The TOEM 2 demo went live on June 6, 2026 — a free slice covering Deltburg, the game's first town — and it is still the right place to start if you are on the fence. This page explains what the demo actually contains, what it teaches you, and what changes between it and the September 29 launch build.
What the demo includes
- Deltburg, the opening town, in its demo-era form: streets, faces, the aquarium, the comedy venue, the fountain, and the sewers beneath it all.
- The full photo loop — photo mode, framing, requests from townspeople, and the first stamps in the book.
- Roughly the game's opening hour of pacing, with the town doing the teaching.
It does not include the other regions (Cropten and Taletorp sit beyond the demo's curtain), and it is a separate build with its own patch history.

Demo vs. launch build: what changes
| Thing | Demo (June) | Launch build (September 29) |
|---|---|---|
| Region covered | Deltburg only | Deltburg + Cropten + Taletorp |
| Saves & stamps | Self-contained; nothing transfers | Full-game progression |
| Camera rotation options | Single invert toggle at first, split into overworld + photo mode by a patch | Split options from the start |
| Polish items | Fountain Maintenance pipes readability, Plum's cutscene, falling trash fixes | Carried into launch and extended |
| Platforms | PC (Steam) | PC, Mac, Linux, Switch 2, PS5 |
The demo's patch notes are worth reading for one reason: they show what the developers consider "readability" problems — pipes inside a maintenance room, floating props, a cutscene's timing. Those are the same instincts the full game is built on, and they tell you the demo was not a throwaway.
Should you play the demo first?
If you own nothing yet: yes. It costs nothing, it teaches the loop without pressure, and Deltburg will feel like familiar ground on day one.
If you have already decided to buy: it is optional but pleasant. The demo's content does not duplicate the launch build task-for-task, so nothing is wasted either way.
If you played it back in June: you have already met half the town — the launch build continues past the demo's ending without asking you to replay anything.
Demo FAQ
Does demo progress carry over? No — no saves, no stamps, no camera roll. Knowledge carries; data does not.
Is the demo still updated? It received patches through June 2026, then handed the torch to the launch build. Content patches now land in the full game.
Will the demo spoil the story? It covers the opening town only; the trip's larger arc begins properly in the full game.
Is the demo representative of performance? It was Steam Deck Verified in its own right, and the full game is Verified too — handheld performance should feel familiar.
